Study Abroad: CIEE Tokyo

In my junior spring semester, I attended Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan through the CIEE Tokyo Arts and Sciences program. Given that I knew minimal Japanese before going, it was a difficult transition to make, but I eventually grew acclimated to Japanese customs (or as much as you can as a non-Japanese foreigner).

Courses Taken

Japanese Law from a Comparative Perspective

High-level law course that explores Japanese law in its particular social, cultural, economic and political context. Course will develop the necessary comparative legal reasoning skills to determine how cultural mores, social structures, and institutional design impact the operation of the Japanese legal system.

Social Issues in Japan

Interdisciplinary sociology course that engages with key theoretical frameworks in gender studies to develop a nuanced understanding of Japan’s evolving gender landscape. Course discussion will place Japan’s gender issues in critical and comparative conversation with global gender inequalities.

Women In Film

Media and film studies course that aims to introduce students to film representations of women in Japanese and American cinema. Discussion will revolve around gender and sexual politics as portrayed in film and how media representation both shapes and is shaped by social and cultural conventions.

Japanese I

Elementary Japanese course designed for students with little to no background in Japanese. The primary aim is to develop basic communication skills and integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Emphasis on mastery of basic functional grammar of Japanese through oral practice.

Introduction to Imperial China

Intro-level history course tackling Chinese civilization, culture, and society from the earliest archeological records through roughly the nineteenth century. Course provides an overview of the major political, intellectual, economic, and social events that shaped the course of Chinese history.

Flora, Fauna, and Farmland.

Just some of the many, many photographs I took abroad of scenery and architecture that caught my eye, organized by vague categorization but mostly visual similarity and color cues.
